We all want our children to be individuals who can take responsibility and perform the responsibility in the best way. Can we teach our children well enough how to take responsibility? Here we want to talk about what you can do to bring responsibility to children.

What is the responsibility? Let's start with this question first. Responsibility is defined by many experts as “adaptation of individuals, fulfilling their duties and undertaking the consequences of the effects of an event on others”. Responsibility is a skill that can be learned and that is why it is important to inform / educate children about responsibility at an early age.

Responsibility for 1-3 years…

When a child throws a toy on the floor, the child learns your reaction to it, and when the behavior is repeated, the child receives the same response and now learns your reaction to this behavior. Therefore, when you want to teach your child something at this age, it is very important that you predetermine your reaction and be consistent with the same response each time the behavior is repeated.

Also during this period, the child should be taught what consequences he / she will encounter if he / she does not fulfill his / her responsibilities and must be consistent in this matter.

Children in this age group may be encouraged to take on responsibility by carrying tasks to the dining table, dressing on their own, brushing their teeth, and collecting their toys.

Responsibility in the age of 4-6 years…

Children in this period are very eager and excited to show responsibility skills to adults. Giving responsibility to children in this period is very important to support children's wishes. Responsibilities given to children will also support their self-control, especially at this stage, and enable them to recognize their own personal skills.

It can be ensured that children in this age group take responsibility within a group. Thus, children have the opportunity to realize their own development and the ability to develop empathy skills.

What can be done?

• To give tasks and responsibilities appropriate to the age, developmental level, individual characteristics and interests of the child

• To allow him / her to choose whenever possible.

• Helping him / her find solutions for the problems he / she faces and intervening only where necessary

• Rewarding in cases where it acts responsibly

• Evaluating the results of his actions and making them see how these actions can affect others.

• To support and assist the child in fulfilling his / her responsibilities without interrupting them by trying to evaluate the situations in which he / she wants to take responsibility.

• Encouraging the child to carry out the responsibility he / she takes
